Back Pain

colic in babies

    Is your baby unsettled?
Do they cry for long periods of time?
Are they hard to console? Do they arch their back or draw their knees up to their tummy?
Or do they seem to be in pain?

What could it be?

Current medical thinking suggests that undigested lactose (one of the proteins in milk) is not digested properly by the time it reaches the lower gut, so it ferments, causing gas, bloating and pain.

So why doesnʼt the lactose get digested properly?

It may be because the baby is slightly lactose intolerant, or because the gut pushes the milk through too quickly, so it does not have time to digest it properly. Strains and tension from the birth can irritate not only the gut itself, but also the nervous system, or nerve supply to the gut, significantly aggravating the problem.

How can an osteopath provide colic relief to my baby?

Very gentle osteopathic treatment helps to release any strains in the base of the skull or in the gut that contribute to the problem, while we also look at ways Mum can help by exploring diet, allergies and supplements.
