The bones of a baby’s head are relatively soft and may deform under sustained pressure. A number of things may lead to an abnormal head shape or a flat spot on the skull:
In the womb: if the baby is in one position for a long time, with their head against one side of Mums pelvis or up under her ribs it can cause a flat area on the baby’s head.
During the birth, if forceps or suction is used, the pressure can distort the shape of the baby’s skull.
Prolonged periods of time lying in the same position with pressure on the same part of the head.
Early fusion of the cranial bones (craniosynostosis). This will often need referral to a pediatrician for further advice.
As well as being unsightly, this altered head shape can lead to secondary problems in the rest of the spine as the child grows. Cranial Osteopathy can help overcome these issues.
Cranial osteopaths are fully trained to assess and gently treat the factors which are contributing to the altered head shape as well as showing parents how best to help their baby at home. This ensures the best possible outcome.
