reflux & silent reflux treatment
Does your baby vomit after every feed?
Are they struggling to gain weight?
Do they seem uncomfortable during or after feeding?
Do they hate being laid flat on their back, especially after feeding?
Will they only settle if they are kept upright?
Do they wake up screaming?
Do they cough and grimace a lot?
What could it be?
Your baby may well have reflux.
If your baby has all these symptoms but rarely vomits, they may have silent reflux.
What is reflux?
Reflux involves acid and food from the stomach coming up into the oesophagus, (the tube that takes food from the mouth down in to the stomach.) This causes pain as the acid burns and irritates the sensitive lining of the oesophagus. This happens if the valve between the baby’s oesophagus and stomach does not work very well, allowing the stomach contents to escape. This can result in frequent vomiting, (reflux). Sometimes the stomach contents only escape part way up the oesophagus. This is silent reflux, the baby shows all the symptons of reflux, without the frequent vomiting.
So what can be done?
Your GP or pediatrician may prescribe medication to neutralize the acid and relieve the burning. Strains and tightness through the baby’s chest and diaphragm from the birth can twist and irritate the gut and reduce the efficiency of the stomach valve. Also, compression through the base of the baby’s skull, again from positioning in the womb or from the birth, can irritate the nerve to the gut, aggravating the problem.
Gentle osteopathic reflux treatment can relieve the tightness and strains in the chest and diaphragm and relieve the pressure on the nerves. This often makes the baby much more comfortable and can significantly reduce the frequency of the vomiting. We can also show you some great massage and calming techniques to use at home.
It is also important to consider food sensitivities or allergies, especially if there is a family history.
